Dot is a family of pendant lamps designed by Foster + Partners to make the lighting fixtures similar to discs of light.
Their design perfectly combines formal rigor and the most advanced lighting technology. Dot is made up of two parallel discs of different sizes, connected in the center by a thin metal tube. The smaller lower disk is made of turned aluminum and contains a ring of LEDs optically designed to project a high amount of light onto the upper disk, the diffuser, made of lacquered aluminium.
The high-power source generates an amount of heat that the lower disk cannot dissipate on its own. The problem was solved by inserting a special heat sink (used in the aerospace industry) into the thin tube connecting the disks. Its function is to thermally connect the LED circuit to a heat sink housed in the upper disc.
When turned on, the Dot is a thin and light disk, apparently suspended in mid-air, which generates an enveloping and shadowless flow of light.
There are two finishes: anodized black and anodized brass.
